Animal Stories

Supporting Paws for a Cause helps animals in need!

Throughout the Scotiabank & BC SPCA Paws for a Cause campaign, we're taking the opportunity to feature animals from across the province looking for their forever homes. Below, you can read the story of an animal currently available for adoption, who just might be the perfect fit for your family. You can also browse through a collection of photos and stories on Flickr of shelter residents who have previously been featured during Paws for a Cause at the bottom of the page.

Check back often to see and hear from local animals, and know that by participating in Paws for a Cause you are helping the BC SPCA give thousands of animals a second chance at life.

Saffron needs a home!

Hi, my name is Saffron. Nice to meet you! I'm currently at the Comox Valley SPCA Shelter, awaiting my forever home. I guess I'll tell you the story of how I ended up here...

On November 13, 2008, I was looking around for some food. I guess I wandered too far, because I ended up in a trap. You know those traps used to catch wild animals? Can you believe someone thought I was feral!?! I am the furthest thing from feral that there is.

Anyhow, in the year that I've been at the BC SPCA, I've met lots of cool cats and people. The ladies at the shelter say that I'm a real ladies man, and I guess it's true. One time I helped them calm down a cat who was very confused. I just walked into the room and lay down, and the scared little cat came right out to snuggle with me, so I gave her lots of little kisses. I love other cats. I am a very relaxed cat, but I also love to play.

Now, I know I'm black and black cats are supposed to be bad luck, but how can someone as cool as me be a bad thing?

Have a spot in your home (and heart) for Valentine?

Hi there! I'm Valentine, an adult domestic shorthair female brown tabby cat. The first thing you may wonder is how I got my name. Well, I first arrived at the BC SPCA as a stray on Valentine's Day 2008 - more than a year ago! I haven't found my forever family yet, but I keep telling everyone that they'll be stopping by any day now. So let me tell you more about me.

I like to talk and tell you how I am feeling, so I will hold up my end of a conversation well. Sometimes I complain, sometimes I'm happy and sometimes I just like to chat! I prefer not to be around other cats, as there is just not enough room for more than me in a room. And I don't like dogs. I like to play with toys and have overheard some say that I need the exercise. I also enjoy being petted, and I'll let you know when you over-do it.

I'm looking for a forever home where I can be the "one and only" - where I get all of the attention and don't need to share. I've been hanging out in the office for over a year, and while I love the people and attention, I really want a home to call my own!

If you think that you have room in your home and heart for me, please come in to the Comox Valley SPCA at 1668 Ryan Rd E to meet me. You can also click here for more information on adopting me.

Even if we're not the animal companions for you, there are so many wonderful animals at your local shelter waiting for homes - dogs, cats, bunnies, hamsters, horses....

Who else is looking for a home?

As part of our first-ever Scotiabank & BC SPCA Paws for a Cause Virtual Launch Party, we created the Adoptable Animals Gallery, featuring stories and photos of wonderful animal companions in need of forever homes from across BC. You can view the gallery below, and help the featured companion animals by sharing their photos and stories with friends and family who may be looking to welcome a friendly addition to their families.

To read the story of one of the animals, or to copy and paste the gallery link to share their story and photo online, simply click on the photo when it appears to open it in a new window.

When you donate to our provincial campaign and support local Crusaders and Packs, you are helping rescue, assist and shelter thousands of animals in need each year. Click here to find out more about what the BC SPCA does and how your funds can help.

Thank you for helping us create brighter futures for animals like Soleil!

Hi, Soleil here! I was brought to the Vancouver SPCA shelter by my guardian's uncle, who claimed that I was being picked on by other bunnies. At the time, I was in a lot of pain, and when I was examined, they found out that my hind leg was broken. They also realized that the damage could not have been caused by other bunnies.

Though my guardian's uncle wanted to leave with me, the shelter staff insisted that I receive the medical attention I needed. And so I was abandoned at the shelter, while he drove off without providing any further information.

But rather than dwell on that sad day, I want to hop forward to my happy ending. I was taken to a vet in Coquitlam and had my leg amputated, a cost that was covered by the BC SPCA. I even recently found my forever home!

So thank you to all you two-legged animal friends for all you do to help animals in need just like me. Your support helps stop animal suffering, and you have a part in all of our happy endings.

We thank you for your support!
